Identity Comes Before Confidence
“O LORD, You have searched me and known me.”
Psalm 139:1
Identity Comes Before Confidence
Have you ever noticed that we have the order backwards? The world tells us to build confidence first through speaking up, standing tall, or even fake it until you feel it, and identity will somehow follow. But Psalm 139 tells a different story. Before David ever declared anything boldly, he made one quiet, staggering admission: You have searched me and known me. Known first. Confident second. That is the divine order.
Confidence that isn't rooted in identity is just performance. It rises with applause and collapses with criticism. But when you recognize that you were created by the only One who saw fit to make you One of One, you stop trying to become a carbon copy of someone else. You stop auditioning for a role that was never yours and start walking in the one that always was.
You can't be confident in an identity you haven't claimed. But once you know Whose you are, confidence stops being something you chase, and becomes something you carry.
God did not search you to expose you. He searched you to establish you. And a woman, or a teen girl, who knows she is fully seen and fully known by El Roi has nothing left to prove and everything to walk in.
On July 31st and August 1st, teen girls filled Strong Tower Ministries in Port Arthur for the I Am KNOWN Teen Girl Conference, and I watched the truth of Psalm 139 move from the page into their posture.
They came in the way many of us do: visible everywhere, known nowhere. Followed, tagged, and seen by hundreds online, yet quietly wondering if anyone truly sees them. Because visibility without identity is the enemy's strategy, and these girls came ready to take their identity back.
As each girl entered, they completed a fingerprint entry. One by one, each girl pressed her print onto a card and forgot about it as the day went by. But it was during the sermon the fingerprint was used. Out of eight billion people on this planet, not one fingerprint has ever been repeated. Not one. The God who knit you together in your mother's womb signed His work with an identifier that cannot be copied, forged, or duplicated. You are literally, measurably, biologically One of One.
Through the sermons, the breakouts, and the college panel, I watched confidence grow in real time. Not because we told the girls to be confident, but because they uncovered the uniqueness of who God made them to be. Identity came first. Confidence followed. It always does.
And What God did in that room in Port Arthur is not staying in that room. I am stepping boldly into my own One-of-One identity, and I'm building a place to show you how to confidently do the same.
